Taking family photos is a wonderful way to preserve memories, but getting kids to cooperate during a photo session can sometimes be challenging. With the right preparation, you can make your kids’ photo shoot stress-free and enjoyable, resulting in natural, joyful family portraits.

1. Talk About the Photo Shoot Ahead of Time

Children feel more comfortable when they know what to expect. A few days before your session, explain that you’ll be taking pictures and what that will involve. Use positive language: instead of saying “Don’t cry or fuss,” say, “We’ll have fun taking pictures together, and you can smile, laugh, or be silly!”

2. Choose Comfortable Clothing

Outfits can make a big difference. Choose clothing that is comfortable and easy for kids to move in, while coordinating colors for a polished look. Avoid itchy fabrics or restrictive shoes that could make kids fussy.

3. Bring Favorite Items or Props

Let kids bring something familiar or comforting, like a favorite stuffed animal, toy, or blanket. Props can also be playful and encourage natural smiles.

4. Plan Around Nap and Meal Times

Timing is everything. Schedule sessions when your child is well-rested and fed. A cranky, tired, or hungry child is much harder to photograph, so plan sessions accordingly.

5. Make It Fun

Incorporate games, silly poses, or movement into the shoot. Encourage laughter, dancing, and interaction among family members. When kids are having fun, the camera captures authentic, joyful moments.

6. Keep It Short and Flexible

Young children have short attention spans. Keep the session relaxed and flexible. Step Up Photo photographers are experienced in adjusting the pace, capturing beautiful shots even if your child needs a short break.

7. Reward and Celebrate

A small treat or praise after the session can reinforce positive behavior and make your child excited for future photo shoots.

Capture Beautiful Memories Without Stress

With a little planning and the right mindset, your family photo session can be an enjoyable experience for both kids and parents. At Step Up Photo, we specialize in stress-free family photography that captures genuine smiles and precious moments.

Winter Wonderland Family Portraits

Winter in the Rockies offers a snowy wonderland perfect for cozy, magical family photos. Snow-covered trees, frozen lakes, and crisp mountain air create a serene backdrop.

Why winter is magical for photos:

  • Soft natural light: Snow reflects sunlight beautifully, creating flattering, even illumination.

Photography is constantly evolving, and 2025 promises to bring exciting trends that will inspire both photographers and clients alike. Whether you’re planning a family photography session in Vail, a winter photo session, or capturing life’s special moments, here are the top photography trends you won’t want to miss this year.

1. Cinematic Family Portraits

In 2025, family photography is moving beyond traditional posed shots. Cinematic photography, inspired by film, focuses on storytelling through natural light, dynamic angles, and authentic emotion. These photos feel like scenes from a movie – filled with laughter, candid moments, and the unique personality of your family. At Step Up Photo, we specialize in capturing these cinematic family portraits in Vail and Beaver Creek.

2. Bold and Vibrant Colors

Say goodbye to washed-out tones! Bold, vibrant colors are trending in 2025 family and lifestyle photography. From the rich hues of fall leaves to colorful props in indoor or outdoor sessions, this trend emphasizes life, energy, and vibrancy – making every photo stand out and creating lasting memories.

3. Natural and Minimalistic Locations

While dramatic backdrops are still popular, there’s a growing trend toward simplicity. Open fields, cozy home settings, or snowy mountain landscapes make for authentic outdoor family photography. These locations highlight natural beauty and let the subjects shine. Our Vail and Beaver Creek locations are perfect for capturing magical, natural family moments.

4. Lifestyle Photography

Lifestyle photography continues to grow in popularity. Instead of formal posing, this style captures everyday moments – baking together, playing in the snow, or enjoying quiet family time by the fireplace. It’s ideal for families who want their winter or seasonal photo sessions to feel relaxed, authentic, and full of emotion.

5. Creative Mini Sessions

Mini sessions are perfect for families looking for convenience without sacrificing style. Seasonal mini sessions, such as fall leaves or winter family portraits in Vail, allow clients to capture high-quality images in a shorter time frame. In 2025, photographers are getting even more creative with props, themes, and locations to make every session memorable.

6. High-Quality Digital Delivery and Interactive Galleries

Clients now expect not only beautiful photos but also seamless digital experiences. Interactive online galleries, instant downloads, and mobile-friendly previews are becoming standard. High-resolution digital files, easy sharing, and even virtual framing options make preserving and displaying memories effortless. Step Up Photo ensures your family and lifestyle photography comes with a smooth digital experience.

7. Sustainable and Ethical Photography Practices

Sustainability is an important trend in photography. Many photographers now use eco-friendly materials, reduce waste from prints and props, and choose locations responsibly. Clients appreciate photographers who care about the environment while delivering stunning, high-quality images.

2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year for photography. From cinematic family portraits to vibrant colors, authentic lifestyle moments, and creative mini sessions, these trends focus on storytelling, emotion, and capturing memories in ways that feel both modern and timeless.

More than any other question, clients always ask what they should wear to their family session. Coordinating your outfits can be daunting, but it doesn’t have to be!

In this post, we will tell you what to combine and what to avoid for the family set but we just wanted to add that we think families are beautiful no matter what form they take.

From where to begin? Start with neutrals as your base (ivory, gray, and beige photograph well), then add pops of coordinating color. You can use the sample palettes at the very end of this post to help you choose colors that pair well together!

WE RECOMMEND AVOIDING THE FOLLOWING COLORS:
pure white (tricky for exposure – ivory/off-white is better)
black, dark navy, and dark brown (darkens the overall photograph)
anything neon (creates weird color casts on the skin)
anything that’s very saturated, for instance, bright red

Here are some color palettes that would work well for family photos – feel free to use these to create your clothing combinations!
